Query the cesarean rate expected in your maternity unit, taking into account patients' profile

The aim is to provide maternity units with an expected cesarean-section rate after taking into account their case mix (differences in patients' medical characteristics associated with the risk of cesarean-section).
We studied 40,512 singleton births from 149 different maternity units using data collected from 1994 to 1998 by the AUDIPOG Maternity unit Sentinel Network. We tried to determine that the cesarean rate varies according to the type of maternity unit (legal status, size and level of the care offered), after taking into account the medial characteristics of their patient mix.
Thereby, we are able to provide an estimate of the expected cesarean-section rate (before and during labor) in each maternity.

The estimated cesarean rate can be used as a bench mark for determining the quality of care delivered or for deciding whether maternity units need to be reorganized and as a parameter for future hospital accreditation.
